$Winter Holiday Prep!
Two smallish girls are running around the first floor, high on hot chocolate. We are feeling festive and fighting the gloom away (the post-holiday, rainy day gloom), so we began getting ready for our next holiday celebration already. Wow this begins early!
Today, we’ve dragged out some of our Christmas decorations, and we’re getting ready to make paper menorahs in preparation for the first day of Hanukkah. No, we won’t be dousing our paper menorahs with olive oil and putting them to flame (although that does sound fun). We’re going to make paper flames, too. Yes, I could purchase a real menorah, but I figure, THIS way, my house won’t be burned down by a 3 year old.
This year, we’re celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas and Yule, because we don’t want to choose, and because we are freaks with too much time on our hands. Well, there’s a better reason, actually, but I sound so snooty when I talk about what the husband and I are trying to teach our kids that I’d really rather spare you.
So, the next step is calming down the sugar/chocolate frenzied kids and putting glue and scissors in range! And maybe a call to the psychiatrist as well, so I can set up my next recovery!
Terry I really want to know your reasons for the multi-cultural holiday festivites. Also why did you choose to leave out Kwanza?
OK, you asked!
1. Why the multicultural holiday festivities? We want to provide a smorgasbord of cultural beliefs for our kids to choose from. A buffet table. It’s the opposite of indoctrination and brainwashing. We want them to respect the paths that everyone takes, see the inherent beauty in the fact that we can all choose what we wish to believe. See? Now I sound like a snooty, elitist, hippy godless freak. Thanks!
2. Kwanza is cool, but it’s basically a holiday that’s close to Yule, just… repackaged. In my humble opinion. But we WILL talk about Kwanza and read books on it. And if you think of any other holidays I can jam in, let me know. We’re also going to talk about Saturnalia, for those of us who love Roman mythology! To celebrate, I think I’ll have the girls feed ME dinner!
Holidays SHOULD be interesting, don’t ya think? Traditions shmadishions.
